The importance of upwelling in a geographical area of outstanding fishing is outlined on the basis of studies conducted during the last ten years on the oceanographic conditions of the Galician continental shelf and on the biology and dynamics of the sardine population. In this preliminary study, it is attempted to explain the yearly cycle and the evolution of the sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum) stock in function of the environmental conditions.es_ES
