dc.description.abstractRed mullet (Mullus barbatus) is a demersal fish, associated with muddy sediments, and recommended for use as bioindicator in the Mediterranean Pollution Biomonitoring Programme (MED POL). In 2006, an environmental monitoring by using a suite of biomarker measurements in red mullet was performed in a coordinated way with chemical measurements in fish muscle tissue and in sediments from the fishing grounds, in selected areas of concern along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The approach to make an integrated assessment of the quality status of the marine environmental areas is being stressed and expert organization (ICES, MEDPOL) agree that is necessary a joint assessment of the water, sediment and biota performing chemical and biological measurements. In 2008, Spanish Institute of Oceanography has promoted this biomonitoring to be extended for coming years, in order to establish the most appropriate areas along the Mediterranean coast of Spain to assess chemical and biological temporal trends and to attempt an integrated marine ecosystem approach of the chemical quality status of the environment in such areas. So far, results shown biological effects responses in the most polluted areas sampled (Delta del Ebro and Cartagena). Sampling strategy and results will be described and discussed.es_ES
