Abstract
The gonadal ocupation index (GOI) and the percentage of ripe oocytes in the gonad, calculated using image analysis techniques, were taken as indicators of the degree of sexual maturity. All conditions registered a gradual increase in GOI and the percentage of ripe oocytes throughout the experimental period. Máximum values for GOI varied between 30% and 40% in females and between 55% and 75% in males, according with the amount of food available. The extent of gonadal development is directly related to the amount of food available.
