shallow gascontinental shelf
Gulf of Cadiz
Résumé
A shallow gas area has been mapped in the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz, between 10 and 50 m depth.
This area is located in the south of the Guadalquivir river mouth. High resolution seismic reflection profiles, have
been interpreted to characterize the seismic facies and geological structures that could be related to the gas origin
and distribution. At now, this gas storage can be related with high organic content from Gudalquivir river mouth
during the Holocene in the prodelta unit. In this study it ispropose that these gassy deposits can have the origin in
lower units related to transgressive deposits. The main factors that controls the generation of shallow gas, like
rapid sedimentation deposition and abundant organic matter, merge in this area. In the Iberian margin, numerous
previous papers about this subject have been published about the Galician margin. But in the Gulf of Cadiz the
studies about this subject are limited.
