Cod Stock-Recruitment Relationship in NAFO Divisions 3NO

Título : Cod Stock-Recruitment Relationship in NAFO Divisions 3NO
Autor : Paz, X. (Xabier); Larrañeta, M.G. (Manuel Gómez)
Resumen : The cod stock-recruitment relationships in NAFO Div. 3NO were studied by the basic Ricker model and modified Ricker model. Although the models do not adjust to the empirical data, inclusion of the American plaice spawning biomass improves the fit. Adding the mackerel adult biomass also improves the model. Including these two variables in the Ricker model explains almost all variation of the cod stock-recruitment relationship in the area. The confidence level of the parameters in the proposed equation were determined by the bootstrap technique, and its accuracy tested. Was realized a simulation study was performed. The response surfaces show the relations between the four variables studied.

Autor : Paz, X. (Xabier); Vázquez Álvarez, F.J. (Francisco Javier); Fernández Arroyo, A. (Anxo); Casas Sánchez, J.M. (José Miguel); Cárdenas, E. (Enrique) de
Resumen : A randomly stratified bottom-trawl survey was realized in the Flemish Cap (NAFO Div. 3M) in July 1988. The stomach contents of three species were studied: 320 of American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides), 203 of redfish (Sebastes Marinus) and 468 of cod (Gadus morhua). The cod specimens were classified taking into account age groups; in the case of other species by length classes. The food items, the prey occurrence index and the diversity index were determined too. The Schoener overlap index was calculated to study the intraspecific diet overlap in cod and the interspecific diet overlap between the three species. The relation between predator size (cod) and prey size (redfish) was also studied.

Otoliths of Trachurus picturatus from Mauritania

Título : Otoliths of Trachurus picturatus from Mauritania
Autor : Jurado-Ruzafa, A. (Alba); Santamaría, M.T.G. (Mª Teresa García); Duque, V. (Verónica); Carrasco, M.N. (Mª Nazaret); Sancho, A.(Alejandro)
Resumen : One of the target groups of the European pelagic freezer-trawlers fishing off Mauritania is Trachurus spp, commercially named “JAX”. During 2010 and 2011 a total of 9,391 individuals under this codification were analyzed. Only 16 specimens resulted Trachurus picturatus, owing to this species is really scarce in this area. All their sagitta otoliths were removed, washed, labeled and stored. Lengths range between 22.1 and 31.8 cm (see table). An additional smaller individual (15.0 cm) was found into the mantle of an Octopus vulgaris from Mauritania waters (in this case, among the commercial landings from Spanish freezer trawlers, whose targeted species are cephalopods). Data of specimens and photos of their otoliths are presented.

It describes the procedures used in the time of bottom trawl surveys series, carried out in NAFO the Regulatory Area, divisions 3LNO. The aim of these campaigns is to know the status and evolution of the main resources exploited in the area, by the index estimation and also changes in the ecosystem. The protocol extends from the implementation of fishing plan, sampling strategy and choice positions give to various tasks performed on board, both the sampling of the catch of fish and invertebrates or preservation of specimens, such as analysis of stomach contents of fish and hydrographical data collection. Also indicate the methods used not only to collect data on board but in subsequent processing and storage. It includes a series of annexes that present the trawl used, sampling different trawl sampling log and various macroscopic maturity scales of fish and northern shrimp.

Assessment of the Cod Stock in NAFO Division 3M

Título : Assessment of the Cod Stock in NAFO Division 3M
Autor : González Troncoso, D. (Diana); Vázquez, A. (Antonio)
Resumen : An assessment of the cod stock in NAFO Division 3M is performed. A Bayesian model, as used in the last assessments, was used to perform the analysis. Results indicate a fairly substantial increase in SSB, reaching a value well above Blim. The six-years retrospective plot shows that the recruitment is overestimated every year. Three year projections indicate that fishing at the Fstatusquo level should allow SSB to increase slowly, although abundance will remain at levels below observed at the beginning of the series. If the fishing mortality were return to the levels seen before 1995, stock recovery would become improbable.
