Martínez-Gómez, C. (Concepción)

Biography
Eco-toxicologist at Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO). Her research focuses on studying the toxicological effects of environmental stressors (including contaminants and microplastics) by using marine organisms, embryos and celllines (biomarkers/bioassay). She identifies mechanisms of toxicity of environmental pollutants and develops new specific bioassays also applicable for chemical toxicity screening. More than 15 years’ experience in research, assessment and consultancy conducted within the IEO section for Marine Contamination and Biological Effects. This covers a broad range of laboratory/field activities along Iberian Mediterranean Waters and also along the North Iberian continental shelf. More than 15 years’ experience in research, assessment and consultancy conducted within the IEO section for Marine Contamination and Biological Effects. This covers a broad range of laboratory/field activities along Iberian Mediterranean Waters and also along the North Iberian continental shelf. During her research career she worked in Oslo University (Norway) and VU University Amsterdam (The Netherlands). She is a member of the Working Group of Biological effects of Contaminants (WGBEC) of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) since 2004 and she participates in the integrated Meetings of the Ecosystem Approach Correspondence Groups on IMAP Implementation (CORMON) since 2015. In 2010 she chaired the ICES/OSPAR Workshop on the lysosomal Membrane Stability Data Quality and Interpretation (WKLYS). Experience of successfully participation within projects for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), I+D+I National Plan (Spain), Programme Interreg IIIB MEDOCC (UE), within the framework of the EU ERA-Net initiative (6th EU Framework Program) and JPI Oceans (EU Council). So far, Dr. Martínez-Gómez has participated in 37 research projects (5 at European level) and 3 research networks related with marine litter, emergent contaminants and microplastics. She has contributed to 38 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, being the first author of about half of them, getting actually an H-index of 19 (Scopus database).Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Marine Pollution (specialty section of Frontiers in Marine Science and Frontiers in Environmental Science). At present she is involved in PLASMED project, for assessing immune modulation responses caused by co-exposure of MPs and contaminants in mussels. Additionally, she is co-responsible for the design and execution of biological techniques in the biomonitoring programme of the pollution along the Spanish Mediterranean coast to fulfil the requirements of the european Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the MED POL program (UNEP/MAP). Current research interest is related to immune modulation, microparticles, in vitro assay and relationships between marine environment and human health.
