Biography

Santiago Fraga is a researcher at the Oceanographic Center of Vigo of IEO. He earned a licenciado degree in biology at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a PhD from Universidade de Vigo. He joined IEO in 1977 starting a harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring programme in Galicia. During 15 years he simultaneously worked on monitoring and research on HABs and then become a full time researcher. His research interests are on HABs and go from ecology or physiology to taxonomy of harmful species, mainly marine dinoflagellates. During the last decade he focused his work on benthic dinoflagellates and ciguatera. He gives many international taxonomy training courses sponsored by different universities, IOC of UNESCO or IAEA
